Clear classroom expectations ensure that lessons are focused, respectful and free from disruption, allowing teachers to teach and students to learn to the very best of their ability. We expect students to arrive prepared, engage positively, show respect to others and take pride in their work and conduct.
By setting ambitious expectations for behaviour, effort and achievement, we help our students develop the knowledge, character and confidence they need to success both in school and beyond.
Enter Ready - Students at James Hornsby should.....
- Arrive at lessons on time
- Remove their coats before entering a classroom
- Ensure they are not chewing gum
- Check that their uniform is in line with the school expectations and rectify if not
- Greet teachers and other students respectfully
- Walk straight to their allocated seat, as directed by their teacher
- Sit down quietly
- Immediately get equipment out needed for the lesson
- Open their books, write and underline the date and title
- Swiftly complete the do now activity in silence
Learn with Purpose - Students at James Hornsby will help to create a safe, calm and purposeful learning environment by....
- Remaining in their seats unless directed to move by their teacher
- Giving the teacher their full attention by actively listening during teacher explanations and questions. Students will do this by sitting up, facing the teacher and not communicating with others during this phase of the lesson
- Taking part in turn and talk and discussion activities when directed to by their teacher
- Working in silence when directed to by their teacher
- Completing their work in line with the expectations of their teachers and to the best of their abilities
- Presenting their work with pride and not doodling in, or on the front of their books
- Following teacher requests and instructions the first time, without argument
- Not shouting out correct answers. Giving all students the opportunity to think hard
- Responding to questions in the way they have been asked to by their teacher (for example waiting for the name to be called upon)
- Not shouting across the classroom or talking to their peers across the classroom
- Not making overtly loud or silly noises that disrupt the learning of others
- Keeping hands, feet and objects to themselves
- Not having objects out on the desk that distract the learning of themselves and others
- Asking for help appropriately when needed
